Solano
Solano came into existence in 1907, as a railroad station for the train between Dawson (in the north of the state) and Tucumcari. Solano had over 500 residents at one time and was the largest town in Harding County for a while. When the Dawson mines closed in 1950, the railroad stopped its service to Solano, and led to the decline of the town. Today, there are only a few people who live in the town. The Wagon Mound Ranch Supply store inside the old gym, a church, the post office and a few houses are all that remain. This remains cowboy country, though, and there are a number of ranches that surround the town.
In the summer, enjoy under-the-stars western swing dances every month at the Solano Starlight Ballroom dances. Please see the calendar for this year’s dates. These events promote the music of Bob Wills to Harding County. Camping and kids welcome. This is also home to SolanoFest, an annual celebration, held in September.
