Wagon Mound
Wagon Mound, located on I-25, is the largest community in Mora County with a 1994 population of 336. The town was originally called Santa Clara, because of its association with Santa Clara Spring, an important water source. The town sits beneath a huge rock formation that was originally called "Los Cornudos," or "the antlered hills," by the people of Santa Clara. But the nature of this community changed when it became near the place where the two branches of the Santa Fe Trail joined together. Travellers on the Santa Fe Trail called both the town and the hills "Wagon Mound" and thus it has been named ever since.
Wagon Mound thrived as an important wool and stock shipping point on the railroad, serving all of Mora County. Now it is a quiet town, with straight streets that parallel the Santa Fe Railroad. Take time to walk through Wagon Mound and admire the numerous examples of classic northern New Mexico territorial style adobe homes with their pitched tin roofs. Many efforts have been made to restore the buildings, including the historic Santa Clara Hotel.
