Montoya
Now located on Hwy 54, 21 miles west of Tucumcari, the town of Montoya started when the CRI&P Railroad come through. It was first called Rountree for its first post master, Henry K. Rountree, but soon changed its name to Montoya. It was a thriving village along Route 66 and the railroad and served as a major cattle shipping point. Richardson's Store, now closed, was the last business to remain along Route 66 in Montoya. A few inhabitants remain.
Montoya Mesa stands out with the washes of Caliche down the side. That Caliche was used to build the road beds for I-40 and surface many unpaved roads.
