Montezuma
Montezuma Castle and the Armand Hammer
United World College of the American West
North San Miguel County off HWY 65
On the edge of the Pecos Wilderness Area is one of the most famous features of San Miguel County. Montezuma is the site of hot springs in the sparkling Gallinas River basin and a famous railroad resort hotel, Montezuma Castle, a grand architectural achievement once used as a monastery for Mexican priests.
The site is now the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West, one of nine United World Colleges and the only one in the United States. It was founded in 1982 by philanthropist Armand Hammer. Each year about 200 students representing more than 70 nations attend.
The aim of the college is to bring together young people, ages 16-19, from a range of nations, races and social backgrounds to study together in a challenging two-year program and perform wilderness and community services. The goal is that they may learn from this interaction how to respect, cooperate with and live in harmony with people who are different from themselves. The student body is characterized by cultural, social and racial diversity.
Through international education, shared experience and community service, United World Colleges enable young people to become responsible citizens, politically and environmentally aware, committed to the ideals of peace, justice, understanding and cooperation, and to the implementation of these ideals through action and personal example.
